Gijima male roar
on our way back to Earth Lodge we drove down one of our main roads when suddenly a dark figure appeared far in the distance. We quickly realised this was the big Gijima male making his way towards us. We watched as he walked down the road when we heard a roar in the distance behind us. This male shortly after answered the call starting to communicate to his coalition partner and moved straight towards where the roar came from. These two males will meet up again before moving deeper into their territory ensuring they keep the area safe for their lionesses and cubs.

Ntsumi had successfully hunted and secured an impala meal for herself and her cubs. As they were feeding on the impala in the safety of a tree, one of the cubs, in her eagerness, accidentally knocked the kill off the branch, causing it to fall to the ground. We watched in awe as members of the Msuthlu Pride casually strolled past us. The mothers confidently led the cubs and the little ones jumped around but never too far behind. An adorable and heartwarming sighting.

Roars echoed through the drainage line close to Selati Camp on a late wet afternoon alerting us to the whereabouts of the Gijima males along with two Msuthlu Pride females and three cubs. They all emerged from the wet vegetation with full bellies in search of water to quench their thirst.

We enjoyed our first sighting of the two smallest members of the Talamati Pride. Peering over their mother’s panting belly, the two cubs took in their surroundings, suckling happily. The female’s success in bringing down a warthog ensures that there’s plenty of food to fuel her cub’s growing bodies and appetites.

I watched a video on UTUBE within the past year that showed a warthog devouring the newborn of a deer-like animal. The newborn still had the afterbirth tissue on it, and the warthog snatched the baby from its mother and devoured it. So - what goes around comes around as they say...
